Established in 2003 EcoSurv has grown into one of the leading ecological consultancies led by directors Graham and Carole Jeffery, who between them have a wealth of experience in ecology, habitat management and nature conservation. Our team of highly qualified, knowledgeable staff have a wide range of skills and experience, specialising in European Protected Species (EPS), Habitat Management and Maintenance, Planning Law, Arboriculture and On-site implementation and monitoring. All of our professional members of the team are fully qualified and are members of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM).
Stuart Johnson BSc MSc MIEEM – Director of Ecology

Stuart is a graduate of Newcastle University, having attained a bachelor’s degree in Ecological Resource Management and a Master’s degree in Clean Technology. The later involved looking at industrial processes and their associated input and waste streams (energy, water, materials and final product etc) producing novel solutions to reduce waste with associated increases in productivity and profitability. As part of a project for the Master’s degree a 10 week study at a small industry resulted in identifiable savings in excess of £100,000 and as a direct result a sustainable increase in profit of not less than 10% per annum.
Stuart has over ten years’ professional experience as an ecologist; Stuart joined our team at EcoSurv in 2010, taking up position as a director of ecology and bringing with him a broad range of expertise. Stuart has a wealth of experience in the private sector, and has managed a range of ecological projects including infrastructure, residential and industrial projects.
Stuart’s specialist skills include Bat, Barn Owl surveys, Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, and reptiles. Stuart has an excellent working knowledge of UK and European nature conservation legislation, policy and guidance and produces clear, succinct and accurate reports and guidance.
Stuart leads on our Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and produces a range of Scoping Reports and Environmental Statement (ES) he has extensive experience in devising and implementing ecological mitigation strategies including on-site supervision, particularly in respect of bats.
Stuart currently holds Natural England volunteer licences for bats, he is the trainer for volunteer bat workers in Northumberland. He also holds scientific licences for bats throughout England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland together with hibernatory visitor’s licences for the above. He also holds a licence to disturb Barn Owls in several English counties.
Stuart has undertaken Article 6 assessments under the Habitats regulations for several projects with potential impacts on European Protected Sites.
